Grand Council of Fiji Heads


The Great Council of Chiefs was a constitutional body of the Republic of Fiji. It should not be confused with the House of Heads, organ that gathers the Fijian nobility. The Great Council of Chiefs was established by the 1997 Constitution, but abolished in 2012.

Following the coup d'état on December 5, 2006, the Great Council of Chiefs refused to accept the new government led by Frank Bainimarama, even supporting deposed Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase. Competitions

It consisted of 55 members, mostly hereditary chiefs:

Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, though not a member of the Council, was recognized as the "Supreme Chief of Fiji" as the former sovereign of Fiji and head of the Commonwealth, being the 2nd personality of the State.
