At the beginning of his coaching career, he went to Nationalliga B three times, with Étoile Carouge, Urania Geneva and FC Meyrin. He then moved to Servette FC to celebrate the biggest success of his career. In 1999 he won the championship on the last day of the competition. In the 2000 season, Servette FC started weakly and he was still released in the preliminary round. After the departure of champion Marcel Koller, he moved to FC St. Gallen, where he was already released after 8 months because of lack of success.
He then moved to FC Lausanne-Sports. When the club was forcibly relegated, Gérard went into the second league and led the club into the Challenge League (second highest league of Switzerland). This was followed by the change to Xamax, with which he immediately in the first season in the Super League (highest league of Switzerland) ascended. As expected, Xamax had to fight the league, in the backround he was dismissed, Xamax prevented with the new coach Nestor Clausen the descent. Already before the season 2008/2009 he was traded as coach of Servette FC, but it was only after the very weak start of the season as a replacement for unsuccessful Michel Sauthier to Servette FC.
