Buddhist Crisis

The Buddhist crisis (in Vietnamese: Biến cố Phật giáo) is a period of political and religious tension in South Vietnam between May and November 1963, characterized by a series of acts of repression by the South Vietnamese government and a campaign of civil resistance, led mainly by the Buddhist monks.

The crisis was rushed on 8 May 1963 by shots that killed nine unarmed civilians protesting in Hue against banning the Buddhist flag during the Vesak celebrations. The crisis ended in November 1963 with a coup led by the army of the Republic of Vietnam and the arrest and assassination of President Ngô Đình Diệm on 2 November 1963.
