Andrea Andreani

Rape of the Sabine, 1585, after a bronze sculpture by Giovanni Bologna

Andrea Andreani (* circa 1540 in Mantua, † after 1610 ibid.) was an Italian publisher and graphic artist specializing in the so-called Chiaroscuro woodcut.

Andrea Andreani was a master in the sound pressure with several records, like those before him Ugo da Carpi had practiced. He supplied some of his works, which he printed in woodcut, in the manner of Ugo da Carpis, in the so-called Helldunkel. In 1584 he worked in Florence, in 1586 in Siena, most recently perhaps since 1599, in 1602, probably in Mantua, where he was last mentioned in 1610. His death year is unknown, and the sources for Rome in 1623 are based on a confusion with Bernardo Malpizzi, with whom Andreani had worked together.
