Edward Cock

Edward Cock's early portrait.

Edward Cock (1805-1892) was an English surgeon, nephew of Astley Cooper, and through him became part of the staff of Borough Hospital in London, where he worked in the dissection room for thirteen years. Later, he became a surgeon's assistant in 1838, at Guy's Hospital, where he was a surgeon from 1849 to 1871, and from 1871 to 1892 as a consultant. He was an excellent anatomist and a clear and incisive writer, and although he was affected by a stutter, he often used it in a humorous sense. From 1843 to 1849 he was director of Guy's Hospital. He died in Kingston, in 1892.
