Arthur Pearson


Arthur Pearson Sir Cyril Arthur Pearson (born 24 February 1866 and died 9 December 1921) was a tycoon of journalism and publishing in England, known for having founded the Daily Express.

First Years

Pearson was born in the village of Wookey, Somerset and was educated at the prestigious University of Winchester in Hampshire. His first job was as a journalist in the service of George Newnes, who would become a personal assistant. Carrera

After six years of working for Newnes, in 1890, Pearson left to form his own business in the publishing area; three weeks later he had founded the newspaper Pearson's Weakly. In the first edition, a quarter of a million copies were sold.

In 1898, he bought the Herald of Tomorrow, and in 1900 merged it with his old publication, creating great impact on society.

Support for Scouting

Through the publication of the texts of Robert Baden-Powell, Pearson contributed greatly to the founding of Scouting. Death

He died in 1921, the product of a fall in his bathroom. His biography was later written by Sidney Dark.
