Rodrigo de Liendo


Rodrigo de Liendo was a 16th century Spanish Architect. It was born in the year 1510, was a stonemason of the Spanish Island and America in its time.

In 1525 he moved to Santo Domingo de Guzman to build the temple of the Order of Mercy. It began construction in 1527 and was completed in 1555. He participated in the construction of the Cathedral of Santo Domingo begun in 1514, along with the proposal of a new design in 1522, with Luis de Moya and intervention of the bishop Alejandro Geraldini. The value of his knowledge was appreciated by the neighbors of the city who managed not to leave in 1534 and granted him the position of Master Major of the works of Fortaleza.

In 1543 he designed and constructed the Mercy Gate, which was originally called Puerta Grande. From 1547 to 1556 he built the Church of San Francisco de Macoris, the convent and the chapel of the Third Order.

His son Francisco de Liendo was appointed canon of the cathedral and the first native priest of Santo Domingo. In Spain he built works of medieval provincial character that are preserved today.
