Gillian Murphy


Gillian Murphy (born April 11, 1979) is an American ballet dancer. Biography

He began his ballet training at age three in Belgium and continued his ballet classes at age five in South Carolina. He later became a member of the Columbia City Ballet, then continued his studies at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Under the tutelage of Melissa Hayden she danced in leading roles in several school productions including The Nutcracker and Baroque Concert, Western Symphony, Tarantella and George Balanchine's Theme and Variations.

In 1994, at age 15, Murphy was a finalist at the Jackson International Ballet Competition. In 1995, he won the Lausanne Espoir Prix after playing the final round at the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. In 1996, she was awarded a scholarship by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts Level I and nominated to the Presidential Scholar. In 1998, she was awarded a scholarship from the Princess Grace Foundation-USA.

Murphy joined the American Ballet Theater as part of the ballet corps in August 1996, was promoted to soloist in 1999 and majored in 2002.
