Demir Kapija


Demir Kapija or Demir Kapiya (in Macedonian: Демир Капија) is a municipality and a small town in the south of the Republic of Macedonia. The municipality had 4,545 inhabitants in 2002 and covers 311.06 kilometers. The city itself is composed of 3,275 inhabitants, the rest of the population is distributed in the surrounding villages. Demir Kapija is located on the river Vardar and on the road connecting Skopje with Thessaloniki.

Kapija means "gate" in Macedonian, and hence designates iron in Turkish; the name of the municipality can be translated like "iron gate". This term remembers that the city is to the entrance of a throat that surrounds the Vardar to about twenty kilometers. Demir Kapija is also known for its wines.

Demir Kapija is surrounded by the municipalities of Negotino, Konče, Valandovo, Gevgelija and Kavadarci.
