Before Bath

Before the bath is an oil painting by Ramon Casas in 1894 in Barcelona and currently exhibited at the Montserrat Museum in Montserrat.

The delicacy with which Casas represents certain works of intimate character, habitual in his work from 1893, is especially evident in the scenes of toilette. It was not an innovative subject, since some French painters, such as Degas, had represented this subject in an insurmountable way. Casas' vision was less audacious and less sensual than that of other contemporary painters, perhaps because the artist knew its limitations, which, for moral reasons, imposed the Catalan art market. Thus, Casas adopted a more idealized vision of reality, trying to enhance the beauty of the most anodyne scenes of everyday life. In this sense, there is no doubt that works such as the one at hand show their capacity to wrap the reality of a mysterious halo, from an atmosphere that surrounds and integrates all the different elements of the scene. Likewise, the attractive figure of the woman undressing acquires a special dimension not only by the intense white of her clothes but also by the aura of light that sieves through the blind and wraps the face and her hair. > Bibliographic
