Mary Toft (Godalming, England, c.1701-1763), also called Mary Tofts, was an English woman from Godalming, Surrey, who in 1726 was the subject of considerable controversy when she deceived physicians who believed she had given to light rabbits.

Toft was pregnant in 1726, but then had a miscarriage. Apparently fascinated by a rabbit she had seen while working, she claimed that she had given birth to animals. Local surgeon John Howard was called to investigate and, after finding several animals, notified other prominent physicians. The subject attracted the attention of Nathaniel St. André, surgeon of the royal house of Jorge I of Great Britain. St. Andre investigated and concluded that Toft was telling the truth. The king also sent the surgeon Cyriacus Ahlers to see Toft, but Ahlers remained skeptical. By then quite famous, Toft was taken to London, where it was studied in depth. Under intense scrutiny and by not producing more rabbits, he finally confessed to the deception and was subsequently imprisoned.

The public taunts that followed created panic within the medical profession. Several careers of prominent surgeons were ruined and many satirical, bitingly critical works on the subject were produced. The pictorial satirist and social critic William Hogarth was especially critical of the medical profession. Toft was finally released without charge and returned home.
