Ildo Meneghetti
Ildo Meneghetti (Porto Alegre, 1895 - 1980) was a Brazilian engineer and politician, mayor of his hometown and governor of Rio Grande do Sul. He held both positions twice. He was also president of the International Sport Club between 1929 and 1934 and later in 1938. Mayor of Porto Alegre
Affiliated to the Social Democratic Party, on July 15, 1948 he was named mayor of the gaucho capital by Governor Walter Só Jobim. When Jobim was succeeded by Ernesto Dornelles of the Brazilian Labor Party, on February 1, 1951, Meneghetti resigned his position. It was succeeded by Eliseu Paglioli appointed by Dornelles. That same year direct elections for mayor were held, deciding Meneghetti to appear to the position, in a coalition of the PSD, UDN and PL. He won the election ahead of Leonel Brizola of the PTB by about 1,000 votes.
In July 1954 he left the mayoralty again, but this time to appear, and win, the position of governor. Governor of Rio Grande do Sul
From 1955 to 1959 he was governor of his native state, a position for which he would be re-elected in 1962. In the second term, he supported the more conservative segments of society in the process that would culminate in the 1964 military coup. However, Meneghetti was removed from his post by the federal military government, replacing it with Walter Peracchi Barcelos of ARENA.
