Fernando Marín (abbot)

Fernando Marín, abbot commendatario of Santa María de Nájera [Huércanos, h. 1480-Rome, 1527] was secretary of Charles V and imperial commissar in the army of Lombardy during the Italian wars in the decade of 1520.

Abad of Najera

The bachelor Fernando Marin, replaced in 1506 the abbot Pablo Martinez de Uruñuela, his uncle, after a conflict period of several years started in 1490 with the exemption of the monastery to the obedience of the order of Cluny years in which tried to apply in the monastery the reform of religious orders promoted by the Catholic Monarchs. In 1507 he forced the inhabitants of the lordship of Santa María de Nájera to come to the service of the Duke of Najera to support the constable of Navarre in his struggle against the Navarrese army led by César Borgia, prompting a popular response that led to a conflict of Marin with the real power. Soon after, he moved to Rome, being replaced in the government of the abbey by Fray Alonso de Santoyo, although he pleaded to maintain the prelacy and corresponding incomes, both in front of the Holy See and before the court of the queen of Castile , solving in 1511 between the king don Fernando and the abbots capitulants of the order of San Benito of Valladolid to make a payment of 300 ducats to said abbot commendatario by the resignation of its pretensions.

Between 1511 and 1521, he resided in Rome, being at the service of the king of Spain, at least, since 1518. Commissar of the Lombardy Army

In 1521 he was appointed as paymaster and treasurer of the armies of Charles V in Lombardy, and later, he acquired a position of commissioner, without government in matters of war - direction of troops - but with administrative power - in economic matters, and also diplomats, moving from Rome to Lombardy in October of that year. He would reside in the camp of the army until his death in early July 1527 in Rome, after becoming ill after the looting of the city by imperial troops.

Whether or not he benefited from his ecclesiastical benefit, he was entitled at all times until his death, the abbad of Najera.
