The Marriage (Opera)

Marriage is the fragment of an opera by Modest Mussorgsky on the motif of the comedy of the same name by Gogol from 1868. The design of the opera had given Moussorgsky the art critic Stassov. The composer Dargomyshsky and the music critic Cui. Gave him the impetus for this opera.

The opera is about the marriage of a Russian couple. The vain and weak-witted Podcolesin is driven by his energetic friend Kočkarev by force to marry the graceful Fekla Ivanovna. The fourth person is Podkolesin's servant Stepan.

Mussorgski wanted people to express themselves on the stage just like ordinary people, so that the music should also reflect the different characters and behaviors of these four people. In view of this striking realism, this opera comes closest to Shostakovich's opera The nose. Edit source text Normdaten (Werk): GND: 7644119-2 (AKS)
