María Berushko

Maria Aparecida Beruski (in Ukrainian sounds Berushko) was a lost school teacher saving her students during a school fire in Brazil. She may become the first orthodox saint of Latin America.

He was born in 1959 in Curitiba, the Brazilian state of Paraná, into a family of Ukrainian origin. When the fire on April 4, 1986 at the school of the town of Joaquim Távora, Maria, rejecting the possibility of leaving the building quickly, stayed inside, helping the students escape. She knew how to save 5 children, but 8 children with her teacher perished in the flames.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Latin America, considering the beatification, will pass the materials of the case to the Patriarchate of Constantinople for the final decision, the process that can take about three years. One of the streets of Curitiba already bears the name of Beruski (Rua Maria Aparecida Beruski). The teacher is already devoted as a saint to the local community due to some miracles recognized.
