Treaty of Tafna

The Treaty of Tafna was signed by Abd al-Qadir in the name of the resistance against the occupation of North Africa by France and by General Thomas Robert Bugeaud on May 30, 1837, with colonial troops suffering enormous losses and military setbacks in Algeria. In spite of the recognition of the sovereignty of the French empire in Africa by Abd al-Qadir, France paid it with the secession of approximately two-thirds of Algeria to Abd al-Qadir, that is, the provinces of Oran and Algiers. France only managed to stay in a few ports, until the treaty was broken in 1839, giving rise to new conflicts between the forces of the Algerian caudillo and the imperial troops of France.
