Parliamentary elections in Suriname, 1996

The 1996 Suriname Parliamentary Elections took place on May 25, 1996. The pro-government coalition New Front for Democracy and Development, which grouped the NSP, Progressive Reformist Party, National Unity and Solidarity Party and the Suriname Labor Party posed for re-election to Ronald Venetiaan while former National Democrat Party former dictator Desi Bouterse supported Jules Wijdenbosch.

The electoral result gave the victory to the NF with 41.8% of the votes, achieving a simple majority without 2/3 necessary to elect president without the need to form alliances. The NDP ranked second with 26.2% and 16 seats. Despite the efforts of the NF to seek the 2/3, it barely got the support of 4 deputies from Democratic Alternative 91. Without either coalition being able to achieve 2 / necessary, on July 19 the People's Assembly was convened, which defined Wijdenbosch as the new president.

The electoral turnout was 66.7%. Results
