Lyricist

A lyricist is a writer who specializes in creating lyrics for songs, which is usually a paid activity made to order. Singers who write lyrics for their own songs are called songwriters.

Some lyricists work closely with the composers, each participating in the lyrics and their melody, and sometimes the lyricist only writes lyric for an already fully composed piece. For example, Homero Manzi, master lyricist of Tango wrote the lyrics for the music that had already composed Anibal Troilo. Sometimes they also associate to work almost separately, or in reverse, for example, Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics and handed them to Elton John, who later composed the music, having a minimal interaction between them.

In the opera, the librettist performs the lyricist's task, being responsible for all the text that is recited or sung in a work.
