John Collier (sociologist)
John Collier (May 4, 1884 - May 8, 1968), is an American sociologist and writer, American social reformer and defender of the Amerindians. He served as Commissioner for the Office of Indian Affairs in the administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, from 1933 to 1945. He was the primary leader of the Indian New Deal, particularly the Community Reorganization Act Indians of 1934 (Indian Reorganization Act), by which it aims to reverse a long-standing policy of cultural assimilation of the Amerindians.
