Guatemala is a privileged country with unparalleled natural wealth; therefore, laws regulate aspects related to the management of protected areas in accordance with Article 64 of the Guatemalan Constitution, which declares the national interest conservation, protection of national parks, reserves, natural refuges and the flora and fauna that exist in them.

Protected areas are those that aim at the conservation, rational management and restoration of wild flora and fauna, related resources and their natural and cultural interactions, which have high significance for their function or generic values , historical, scenic, recreational, archaeological and protective, in such a way as to preserve the natural state of flora and fauna, water sources and supplies, critical river basins, protective areas of agricultural soils , thereby maintaining sustainable development options.
