First model for the Gate of Hell
The door of hell was commissioned to the French sculptor Auguste Rodin, which was originally conceived as a gateway to the museum of decorative arts, to be built on the site of the former Court of Accounts which had been destroyed in 1871 Inspiration and content of the work
The door was commissioned on August 16, 1880, the idea proposed was to perform a work inspired by the Divine Comedy. In this model initially Rodin, plasma the panels in which the door was originally to be divided. The design of the panels come from the idea to realize the door to image of the door of paradise of the Baptistery of Florence which realized by Ghiberti, however shortly after he leaves the design to be inspired only in the part of Hell and of the interpretation of this one of Charles Baudelaire. The model was made quickly in wax, does not show any details of the works contained, only the general organization of the work which was to be divided into ten sections, divided into 5 each sheet, separated by a border and delimited by a decorative framing
