Beylerbeyis
The Beylerbey (Ottoman بكلربكی Beylerbeyi) designated the most important of the provincial governors in the Ottoman Empire. The word "Beylerbey" comes from the Turkish word Bey and means "Lord of lords". It is also Bejlerbej, Beglerbeg or Beilerbei written.
The administrative area of a Beylerbeys corresponded to the later Eyalet.
Edit HistoryQual
The first Beylerbey was appointed by Sultan Murad I. It was Lala Şahin Pasha, the Beylerbey of Rumelien. In 1393 the office of Beylerbeys was established by Anatolia. These two Beylerbeys were at the head of all the Eyâlets, Vilayets and Sandschaks of their respective sphere of influence, that is, the European and Asian parts of the empire. Only the viziers had a higher rank. In the heyday of the Ottoman Empire numerous additional and smaller Beylerbeyliks were founded as a result of the conquests. This also reduced the relative power and prestige of Beylerbeys. Meaning Variant Edit source text Edit source text Edit source text Weblinks Edit sourcetext
