The Culmann process (often referred to as the four-force process) is a graphic method for solving static problems. The name goes back to the Pfalzer Bauingenieur Karl Culmann (1821-1881). This had made it a vital part of the work to develop drawing techniques in order to be able to determine the dimensions of joists in timber constructions. In order to be able to use the Culmann method, one needs four forces whose directions are known, in addition at least the magnitude of one of these forces must be known.
