Gerhard Bringmann


Gerhard Bringmann (* 26 August 1951 in Münster) is a German chemist. He is Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Würzburg. He is particularly concerned with natural product chemistry.

Bringmann studied chemistry (and biology) at the University of Giessen and the University of Münster (Diploma 1975) and was promoted to Burchard Franck in Münster in 1978. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Derek H. R. Barton at the Research Center for Natural Product Chemistry in Gif-sur-Yvette near Paris. In 1984, he qualified as a professor in Wuerzburg, where he was a professor at Würzburg in 1987.

It deals with isolation, structural reconstruction, biosynthesis and synthesis of natural products from plants, including pharmaceutically important substances such as malaria.

In 2006 he received the Adolf-Windaus-Medal. He is a three-time honorary doctorate and has good contacts to Africa (especially the Congo). He was a guest professor in Beijing and at the Jinan University.
