The Mistico was developed by the Byzantine era. The name, the secret, indicates that the ships often transported important persons or secret messages. They were about 20 to 30 m long and had a load bearing capacity of 40 to 100 t. The ratio of length to width was about 6: 1 to 7: 1. The decked hull was low and often had a half-deck at the stern, recesses for 18 to 36 oars, and possibly guns. The Mistico had two to three masts, the rear mast often only half as high as the jib and the large mast. The masts carried Latin sails without or with Bonnet (looped) or sails or combinations of different rigging. Together they always had two Fockstagsgelgel.

In the 18 th and 19 th century, Misticos were used as coastal coasters, especially in Spain and North Africa. Because of its speed, the Mistico was also popular with pirates. France and the Greek freedom fighters also used armed misticos. A variant of the Mistico is the Schebecke. Weblinks Edit sourcetext Edit source text
