1954 West Berlin State Elections

The fourth elections in West Berlin took place on December 5, 1954.

The SPD nominated Parliament Speaker Otto Suhr, the CDU postulated Walther Schreiber, who after Ernst Reuter's death had taken over as mayor.

The SPD, which until then had been in the opposition, lost 0.1 percentage points, but received 44.6% of the votes and 64 of the 127 seats and thus the absolute majority of seats. This was compensated with 30.4% of the votes obtained by the CDU (which increased by 5.7 percentage points and by ten seats) and 12.8% by the FDP (indicating a loss of 10.2 percentage points and 19 seats). The German Party, with 4.9, could not exceed the 5% required for entry into the Berlin House of Representatives. The SED was also included in these elections, but could not enter the House of Representatives with 2.7% of the vote.

Suhr offered a coalition to the CDU (due to the tense political situation in Berlin), which was approved by the Christian Democrat party. On January 11, 1955 Suhr was elected as the new mayor. Results
