Prison of Wadi el-Natrun

Wadi el-Natrun Prison (Arabic: سجن وادي النطرون) is a prison complex in the governorate of Behera, north of Cairo, Egypt. It consists of two separate facilities for 5 miles away. The prison was used to imprison the Islamists under the regime of Hosni Mubarak and after the Egyptian revolution of 2011, several prominent activists of the Muslim Brotherhood were imprisoned there. On January 30, 2011, thousands of prisoners were helped to escape from prison. Some prisoners have suggested that those responsible for their release were police officers who would have acted under the Interior Ministry, although a court in June 2013 concluded that Hamas and Hezbollah worked with the Muslim Brotherhood to orchestrate the escape from jail. 34 Brotherhood activists, including future President Mohamed Morsi and Saad el-Katatni, were some of those who escaped from prison.
