In order to celebrate the hundred years of the resistance of Zaragoza against the French troops, the incipient local bourgeoisie organized a series of acts that constituted the first manifestation of the modernity in Aragon.

In 1902, the Royal Aragonese Economic Society of Friends of the Country formed the Junta of the 1st Centenary of the Sites of Zaragoza and opened a public subscription, although, according to one of its members, "nothing was made positive and real" until in 1907 the king Alfonso XIII granted, by intervention of Segismundo Moret, a subsidy of 2,500,000 pesetas to the work.

The Spanish-French Exposition was the center of the festivities, and sought to establish ties of brotherhood with France. Many other activities were organized, including several congresses: Export, National Agricultural, Tourism International, Economic Friends of the Country, International Historical War of Independence, Pedagogical, Good Press, Mariano Nacional. The king and Antonio Maura visited the city, the remains of General José de Palafox and other fighters were transferred, on July 14, the title of "Immortal" was awarded to Zaragoza and a large number of works on the Sites were erected not only in Zaragoza but in many localities of Aragon.
