Upaia ('means') is a Sanskrit term that refers to 'something that does achieve a goal'.

It is used in Buddhism Mahayana Buddhism

The term is often used with the word kaushalya (कौशल्य, intelligence in the sense of clairvoyance). upaya-kaushalya means skill means or skillful means. Upaya-kaushalya is a concept that emphasizes the fact that practitioners can use their own specific methods or techniques to achieve cessation of suffering and introduce others to the Dharma. This means that even if a technique is not true in the ultimate and total sense, it may be a convenient practice to improve practice as long as it brings the practitioner closer to realization.
