Pentylgruppe

Possible isomers of the pentyl group. The red dotted lines indicate the binding connections. Upper row from left to right: n-pentyl (amyl), 2-pentyl (sec-pentyl), 3-pentyl; Mean series: 2-methylbutyl, 3-methylbutyl (isopentyl or iso-amyl), 3-methylbut-2-yl, 2-methylbut-2-yl; Lower row: 2,2-dimethylpropyl (neopentyl)

A pentyl group in chemistry is a hydrocarbon residue with five carbon atoms and the sum formula of C5H11 as a substituent in organic molecules. The name comes from the Greek Penta for five and the suffix -yl. Since there are various possibilities of branching, one obtains a series of eight isomeric pentyl residues (see pentanols).

The isomeric pentyl groups have trivial names for historical reasons. For example, Amyl is the n-pentyl radical; n-pentyl alcohol is therefore also known under a trivial name amyl alcohol. Edit source text
