In 1959 Bill Smith founded his company Bill Smith Motors. In 1963 he took part for the first time in the motorcycle world championship in classes up to 250 and up to 500 cm³. In 1968 he won the 350 cm³ race at the Northwest 200. In 1978 he became TT-F3 World Champion on Honda and 1979 Formula TT-F3 Vice World Champion likewise on Honda. In 1981 he became Formula TT-F3-Fifth. He drove his last race in 1976.

Bill Smith took 14 races in the Motorbike World Championship and finished 4 third places at the Isle of Man TT and five races in the Formula TT with a victory, a second and a third place.
