Freiform Reflector

A free-form reflector is a reflector of a directed light source, such as the headlights of a motor vehicle, but also of hand, office or other lamps whose special property is that the reflector shape does not correspond to a mathematical control surface. This type of reflector is composed of a number of surfaces, the shape and size of the individual surfaces being computed by a computer. The reflector is made by injection molding.

The luminaire can be freely adapted to a superordinate shape, such as a car body line. With free-form reflectors, an asymmetrical illumination can be realized without the otherwise required diffusing screen. This simultaneously increases the usable light intensity. Freiform reflectors were introduced in 1988 and today they have been widely used as clear-glass headlights for motor vehicle lighting, both for design and cost reasons.
