Ferenc Gyulai


Ferenc József Gyulay, 1850

Count Ferenc Gyulai of Marosnémeti et Nádaska (Pest, 1798 - Vienna, 1868) was a general of the Austrian Empire. In 1849 he was appointed Minister of War by Francisco Jose I. He would only last in office a year.

As a military man he stood out for his participation in the invasion of Piedmont during the Unification of Italy. To the control of its troops crossed the river Ticino the 29 of April of 1859, invading Piedmontese territory. In this invasion suffered two hard defeats in the Battle of Montebello and Magenta. In both battles Gyulai lost thousands of men and opted the war in favor of the Italian side. After the defeat at Magenta he was dismissed for his inefficiency. During the time that the invasion lasted it exerted like Austrian Viceroy of the Milanesado. He returned to Austria where he would die nine years later.
