Edouard Mathos received the priestly ordination in Bossangoa after his theological training on 19 June 1977.

Pope John Paul II appointed him as auxiliary bishop in Bossangoa and titular bishop of Giufi on 28 August 1987. The Bishop gave him the cardinal prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Jozef Tomko, on 10 January next year; Co-conspirators were Joachim N'Dayen, Archbishop of Bangui, and Sergio Adolfo Govi ​​OFMCap, Bishop of Bossangoa.
