Amiga 2500

The Amiga 2500, also known as the A2500, was an upgraded version of Commodore Amiga 2000. Unlike its successor the Amiga 3000, which was entirely new in design, the Amiga 2500 was Amiga 2000 repackaged with an accelerator card based on a Motorola 68020 microprocessor. Later versions of the A2500 used a Motorola 68030 microprocessor. The accelerator cards used by the Amiga 2500 were also available separately as upgrades for the 'Amiga 2000.

Since the Amiga 2500 had a Motorola 68000 microprocessor on the motherboard that was not being used, the design was not very cost effective. A version with reduced cost omitting the accelerator card was proposed but never exceeded the stage of the prototype. In addition, because the Amiga 2500 was not a fully 32-bit machine, its performance was lower than an Amiga 3000 running at the same clock rate.

The Amiga 2500 was in production after the release of the Amiga 3000, however, because the Video Toaster did not fit in an unmodified Amiga 3000 case. Until the release of the Video Toaster 4000, the Amiga 2500 was the fastest computer available for the Video Toaster.
