At the age of 17, Dieter Schweikard already began his vocal training at the Cologne University of Music and Dance, Wuppertal Department, during his training as a bell founder. At the age of 23, he had his first engagement at the State Theater in Saarbrücken. Further commitments were made at various stages, including the Staatsoper Hannover, the Wuppertaler Bühnen, the Dortmunder Oper, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and the Cologne Opera. Schweikard has been a permanent member of the Ensemble of the Cologne Opera since 1988.

His guest engagements took him to all the major opera houses in Europe, such as Berlin, Paris, Hamburg, Munich, Rome, Brussels, Naples and Amsterdam. From 1981 the bassist sang for 12 years at the Bayreuther Festspiele. Schweikard worked with famous conductors and directors of the 20th century, such as Georg Solti, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Wolfgang Wagner and Grischa Barfuss. In the 1980s, Schweikard founded and directed the chamber opera in Herdecke and at the end of the 1990s he founded the children's opera at the Cologne Opera.

In parallel to his performances, he dedicates himself to the training of young singers as teachers at the Cologne Musikhochschule, gives master classes worldwide and is the founder and director of the International Singing Academy in Wels, Austria. Weblinks Edit sourcetext
