Cross-Slab of Altyre house

The cross-stone

The Cross-Slab of Altyre house is a sandstone column and has been around eight miles south of Forres, County Moray, Scotland. It is said to come from a field of Roseisle, north-east of Forres.

The approximately three-meter high slender cross-slab has a flat-rectangular cross-section of 86 × 18 cm and stands on a field surrounded by forest. The pictorial sandstone column dates back to at least the 9th century and is decorated with a partially preserved cross on the front and an incompletely incised cross on the reverse. The Oghamschrift on the left is over a meter long. Their meaning, however, is unknown, as it is written in pictorial language.

Close by is the ruins of Altyre Kirk from the 13th century. Just a few kilometers from the cross-slab of Altyre house stands the similar Suenostein. Edit source text Weblinks Edit sourcetext
