Stricto sensu

Stricto sensu (or sensu stricto) is a Latin expression meaning "in the strict sense" or "in a narrow sense". It is often used in law and is opposed to the expression lato sensu (or sensu lato -s.-or broad sense-a. Or s. Ampl.).

The expression is abbreviated s. s. o s. str. and is used when two interpretations are possible for a word, name or expression, and one of them covers the other, to indicate that the term that accompanies it must be interpreted in the narrowest or narrowest of its meanings, not in the most encompassing term.
