Juan de Herrera and Chumacero


Juan de Herrera and Chumacero (Santa Fe de Bogotá 1665 - ibídem 18 of March of 1738) was a composer of religious music of the Colombian Baroque.

Biography He was born in Bogotá around 1665. Educated with Dominicans or Jesuits, his first relevant post is in the primate cathedral of Colombia as chapel master, replacing José Cascante in 1702. He was also probably a music teacher in the convent of Santa Inés, also in the Colombian capital.

He remained in the position of Master Chapel until his death in 1738. Work

His composition is predominantly vocal and in Latin, emphasizing his three requiem masses, one of them for five voices. The success of the masses was such that it displaced the works that had been imported from the peninsula to be interpreted in the funerals of important personages of the aristocracy. Bibliography
