From 22 December 1997 to 17 September 2000, Purryag succeeded Prem Nababsing as deputy Prime Minister of Mauritius. From July 12, 2005 to July 20, 2012, Purryag succeeded Prem Ramnah as spokesman for the National Assembly of Mauritius, which he has been a member since 1976. From July 21, 2012 to May 29, 2015, Purryag was the President of Mauritius, succeeding Anerood Jugnauth. Purryag is a member of the Labor Party. Purryag is married and has a child.
