Josep Reig

Josep Reig (c., 1584 - Barcelona, 1674) was a chapel master of the church of Santa María del Mar in Barcelona from 1618 until his death. All the motets are written with a clear Italian influence with the incorporation of the continuous bass and in a policoral style close to the Venetian school of the Gabrieli. He could have studied with Joan Pau Pujol (1673-1726).

During the seventeenth century, he was one of the masters who held the most years. He appeared to the oppositions, without winning them, on June 26, 1607 when he was only twenty-two. He was born, therefore, in 1584 or 1585. The 16 of September of 1618 returned to present to the oppositions and gained the place. On May 20, 1655 he was appointed chapel master ad vitam and on May 24, 1669 he asked to be replaced by his assistant, Miquel Rosquelles, after more than 50 years of teaching.

The manuscripts of his works were preserved in the church of Santa María del Mar but were burned during the Spanish Civil War. Nevertheless, they had been photographed before by Higini English to be next to the works of Joan Pau Pujol. There were 8 notebooks, one for each voice, bound in parchment, and contained 26 motets of Reig and 17 of Pujol. The fact that the collection contains only motets of Reig and Pujol perhaps indicates the links that could have existed between them.
