Stamm of the Reinberger Linde

The Reinberger Linde is a 1000 year old lime tree at the village church in Reinberg in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen. The lime tree in a 1906 picture

The age of the linden tree, which is designated as a natural monument, is estimated to be around 1000 years, which would make the lime tree much older than the neighboring historic village church. The tree has a height of about 19 meters and a crown diameter of about 17 meters. The trunk circumference is 10.80 meters at 1.30 meters.

After a Senate decree, the preacher who had previously been buried in the church before the altar was buried under the linden tree from 1782 onwards. The Linde was mentioned in 1795 in the travel notes of Johann Friedrich Zöllner. He wrote: "On the half of the road we stopped in the village of Reinberg to see a strangeness; this is a lime tree on the churchyard, which is 37 ½ feet below the stem, and is green, both internally and externally. It is completely hollowed out, and the bark, where it is broken, has not only curved inwards, but has also driven young branches. It is a neat two Cabinette, in which each can be resided by a few persons. "In 1796, Wilhelm von Humboldt is said to have admired the mighty tree.

A Reineberg lime tree or thick linden tree was also available in the Reineberg at the Reineberg in the beginning of the 20th century.
