Braunston Goddess

Die „Braunston Goddess“

The Braunston Goddess is a stone female figure of unknown age standing in the cemetery of the All Saint's Church in Braunston, the formerly smallest independent administrative unit in Rutland, England.

Their original purpose is unknown, although they remind a little of the "Hunky Punks of Somerset". The figure is not a Sheela-na-gig. For many years, it lay with the front side down in front of the church door, before it was rediscovered and erected in the 1920s - today it stands at the foot of the church tower. The cemetery is located on a round hill and can have been a pagan cult area.

The figure shows a grotesque female head. The stone can represent an ice age or Celtic goddess figure. When this area was "Christianized", it could have been incorporated into the church to encourage the locals to visit the early Christian church. However, the memory of such a church has been lost. The first occupied church at this point dates back to the time of the Normans. It was replaced in the 14th century before it was demolished in 1848 and the material used to build the church today.
