Sweathouse of Cadian

The hard-to-find Sweathouse of Cadian (Irish Céidín) is located two kilometers southwest of Eglish in County Tyrone in Northern Ireland. The Sweathouse (welding house) is one of the best preserved in Ireland. It is at the extreme corner of a small muddy field, close to the field boundary and on the banks of a small river. It is located on the "Eglish Heritage Trail".

The access is about 75 cm high and the oval building measures about 1.35 × 1.5 m. The dry wall walls are about 1.5 m high. Outside, the welding house is about two meters high. Originally it was covered with three long slabs and with small stones filling the interstices. A small triangular hole served as a smoke exhaust. In recent years, however, it has suffered a bit and now there is a hole of about 40 cm in the roof. Edit contextual text

There is a large number of cantilevered vaults built of dry stonework around Europe, such as the domed buildings of the Hebrides, which are very similar to the Sweathouses. All other types, however, have proper doors, as opposed to the tiny entrances of the Irish Sweathouses. Edit source text Weblinks Edit sourcetext
