The orta oyunu is a Turkish dramatic genre whose name literally means "theater of the middle" or "theater of the circle".

Of imprecise origin, the orta oyunu presents concomitances with the medieval mime, the Commedia dell'Arte and the Karagöz. Its stage is as simple as an oval that is drawn on the earth. His main characters are Pishekar (businessman and stage director), Kavuklu (a clown or comic character similar to Karagöz) and various popular types: the Persian merchant, the Armenian goldsmith, the Arab beggar, the Kurdish night watchman, the colonel the Levantine vain to the European, the bellicose merchant (played by a man), the drunk, and so on. A triangular footstool and a double-awning awning are enough to make up the set, and if necessary can be completed with a barrel, a basket and a pair of multicolored umbrellas. The musicians, with oboes and timbales, squat on the periphery of the stage, while spectators stand around.
