Theodor Askidas

Theodor Askidas was Bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia from 537 to 558.

Theodor, a monophysite-minded Palestinian monk, was expelled from the Sabas Monastery during the Origenist turmoil. In the year 543, however, he surprisingly agreed with the Origen's condemnation. On his initiative, Emperor Justinian I, during the Christian disputes of the sixth century, issued a decree about three outstanding representatives of an alleged Nestorianism: Theodor of Mopsuestia, Theodoret of Kyrrhos and Ibas of Edessa. Instead of hoping to achieve an understanding with the monophysitic (or miaphysitic) theologians, the so-called three-chapter controversy was triggered.

Pope Vigilius, who, under imperial pressure, condemned the condemnation of the three chapters, later denounced and excommunicated Theodor Askidas and the Constantinople Patriarch Menas. Edit source text Standard data (person): GND: 103115293 (PICA, AKS) | VIAF: 415849 | Wikipedia People Search
