Heinerfest
Heinerfest
The Heinerfest in Darmstadt is one of Germany's largest inner-city festivals with around 250 exhibitors. It exists since 1951 and today is visited by approximately 700,000 interested. In addition to rides around Darmstädter Schloss as well as Karolinenplatz and Riesenrad on the market square, more than 100 free events take place: live stages, theaters, exhibitions, concerts, hikes, films and sports tournaments.
The Heinerfest was founded during the reconstruction of the city, destroyed in the Burnnacht from the 11th to the 12th of September 1944, as a sign of hope and a renewed enthusiasm for life. The name Heinerfest was derived from the nickname "Heiner" for the Darmstadt population.
The Heinerfest always takes place on the five days from Thursday to Monday around the first Sunday in July. During this time, the city center is closed to traffic, buses are diverted. The end of the Heinerfest is the great high-altitude fireworks on Monday evening (over the Herrengarten in 2010, above the Darmstadtium since 2011).
The health care service at the Heinerfest takes over the German Red Cross from Darmstadt. The medical attendants can be found in the Darmstadtium and Luisenplatz.
The Heinerfest also played a part in the ZDF six-person death of a student and in the TV series Die Drombuschs. Edit source text Weblinks Edit sourcetext
