Popular Democratic Movement
The Movimiento Popular Democrático (MPD) is a revolutionary communist party with a Marxist-Leninist and Maoist orientation in Ecuador, split in 1978 by the Partido Comunista Marxista Leninista del Ecuador. She has close relations with the Juventud Revolucionaria del Ecuador and the Teacher Union Unión Nacional de Educadores. Your deputies sit in a variety of parliaments of Ecuador at different levels. It also has 2 prefectures (Lucía Sosa in Esmeraldas and Diego Ormaza in Cañar) and a number of mayors. The province of Esmeraldas is a traditional high castle of the party. From here came the presidential candidate and former parliamentary deputy of the party, Jaime Hurtado, murdered in 1999.
The party had three seats in the 2007/08 Constitutional Assembly; their deputies supported the new constitution. In the 2006 National Convention, she also won three seats, one for the provinces of Esmeraldas, Pichincha and Pastaza. Her chairman and Presidential candidate Luis Alfredo Villacís won 1.33 percent of the votes in the presidential elections at the same time, and thus did not reach the ninth place in the first round. In the elections to the 2009 Annual General Meeting, the MPD secured 5 seats. Together with Pachakutik and some others, she forms the Alianza Progresista faction, which is close to the government.
