Ika
Village of the Arhuaco Arhuaco
The Ika or Arhuaco are an indigenous people living on the southern side of the Sierra in Colombia. Together with their neighbors the Arsarios (also Malayo or Wiwa) and the Kogi, their membership amounts to an estimated 20,000. Edit the source text
The Ika live from the cultivation of maize, cassava, cooking bananas and various fruits. Spanish settlers have introduced coffee, sugar cane, wheat and cattle, which is now also used as food.
The Ika call themselves "the older brothers," because they assume that they have a greater understanding of the world than other people, who therefore call "the younger brothers." The men wear a conical white hat that symbolizes the snow-capped mountain peaks of the Sierra. Weblinks Edit sourcetext
