Variants and their uses
The SKID-I is used for the detection and diagnosis of selected psychological syndromes and disorders of outpatient or inpatient patients, as defined in the DSM-IV on the axis 1 ("Clinical syndrome"):
In addition, coding options for the assessment of axis III (physical disorders) and axis V (psychosocial function level) are offered. All diagnoses are collected in the longitudinal and cross-section as well as with additional information about the start and the course.

Technically, the SKID-I is a guide to the interview: the interviewer places certain questions and encodes the answers (eg "symptom not present" / "symptom subconsciously present") in order to finally be able to make a differential diagnosis. However, standardized survey instruments (eg questionnaires such as the Beck Depression Inventory, BDI) can be supplemented if necessary. The SKID begins with a short coding section for biosocial data and research documentation. At the beginning of the interview you will find a short exploration guide. The exploration provides an overview of current and past symptoms and symptoms, before systematically asking for the above specific symptoms.

The SKID-II is a two-step process consisting of a questionnaire and a subsequent interview. The questionnaire is used to screen for the characteristics of the eleven personality disorders detected. In the following interview, only those questions are needed, for which a "yes" response was selected in the questionnaire. This approach reduces implementation time.
